DroneDeploy is a San Francisco software company that captures and interprets visual records of physical sites. It builds no aircraft. It sells the layer that plans the flight, processes the imagery, and turns the result into something a construction or asset-management team can act on. Customers are enterprises in construction, energy, mining and infrastructure; Turner Construction, DPR, Skanska, Rio Tinto and BP are named on the company’s own site. Procore Technologies bought it for roughly $845 million in cash, completing the deal on 9 September 2026.

What the Platform Does Now

The description of DroneDeploy as a drone software company has aged. Aerial mapping is still the core, but the platform now ingests 360-degree walkthrough cameras, phone-based 3D scanning, and imagery from ground robots including Boston Dynamics’ Spot, for which DroneDeploy publishes a connector in its robotics portal.

At its Horizons 2025 event the company launched three AI products — Progress AI, Safety AI and Inspection AI — which it says automate schedule tracking, hazard detection and predictive asset inspection from captured imagery. It also announced beta deployments of quadruped and crawler ground robots for 2026. These are company positioning statements rather than independently measured results; the accuracy claims for Progress AI come from customer testimonials on DroneDeploy’s own site.

Business Position

DroneDeploy raised roughly $142 million through a $50 million Series E in 2021, then took a $15 million strategic round in September 2025 co-led by existing investors Emergence Capital and Scale Venture Partners, with Airtree, Bessemer and Uncork participating. The company said at that point it had reached break-even. That claim is unaudited but consistent with taking a small insider round rather than a large growth round.

On 29 July 2026 Procore announced a definitive agreement to acquire the company for approximately $845 million in cash, backed by a $700 million bridge commitment that is not a closing condition. The Federal Trade Commission ended the antitrust waiting period early on 1 September, and Procore completed the purchase on 9 September, making DroneDeploy a wholly owned subsidiary. Procore cites DroneDeploy’s use across more than three million jobsites in over 180 countries and roughly 20 trillion square feet of accumulated visual data.

Why It Matters

The acquisition price is the honest verdict on the standalone drone-software business. DroneDeploy built a real distribution position and a large proprietary dataset, and got to break-even — but it exits at a valuation an enterprise SaaS company would consider modest, into a construction platform that wanted the data and the capture layer rather than the company.

The strategic logic is that reality capture is a feature of a construction management system, not a market. If that is right, independent drone-data platforms have a ceiling. The residual risk for DroneDeploy’s non-construction customers in mining and energy is whether a Procore-owned product keeps investing in verticals that do not run on Procore.
