Edge Autonomy

Edge Autonomy builds long-endurance fixed-wing uncrewed aircraft for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and target acquisition, along with the electro-optical payloads and power systems that go with them. It is no longer an independent company: since June 2025 it has been a subsidiary of Redwire Corporation and forms the core of Redwire’s Defense Tech segment. The edgeautonomy.io domain now redirects to Redwire’s site, and Edge Autonomy survives as a product brand rather than a corporate one.

The company took its present shape in February 2022, when UAV Factory — a Latvian airframe maker — and Jennings Aeronautics, a California payload and small-UAS business, rebranded as Edge Autonomy after combining in September 2021 under the private equity firm AE Industrial Partners. The headquarters is the former Jennings site in San Luis Obispo, California, with manufacturing retained in Latvia.

Aircraft

Penguin Mk3 — the current generation of the Penguin tactical UAS and the platform the business is now selling. In May 2026 Redwire announced a multi-year contract from an undisclosed NATO country, described as high eight figures, for Penguin Mk3 as the backbone of that country’s tactical drone modernisation. Earlier Penguin variants, including the Penguin C that older descriptions of the company centre on, are the predecessors to this line.

Stalker (VXE30) and Stalker Block 30 — a Group 2 fixed-wing UAS roughly half the takeoff weight of Penguin, originally sold by Lockheed Martin Skunk Works but designed and built by Edge Autonomy. Redwire reported follow-on Stalker Block 30 awards in its second quarter of 2026.

Edge Autonomy has delivered more than 250 Penguin aircraft to the Ukrainian Armed Forces under direct contract since 2022, with deliveries continuing into 2026. That is the clearest evidence available for the platform’s combat record.

Ownership and Financial Position

Redwire (NYSE: RDW) agreed to buy Edge Autonomy in January 2025 and closed on 13 June 2025, paying $160 million in cash plus 49.8 million shares; reported transaction value was about $925 million.

The acquisition now supplies most of Redwire’s growth. In the second quarter of 2026 Redwire reported record revenue of $117.1 million, up 89.6 per cent year on year, of which Defense Tech — Edge Autonomy — contributed $61.9 million against $55.2 million from the space segment. Group gross margin was 27.8 per cent, net loss $41.0 million, adjusted EBITDA negative $3.2 million, contracted backlog a record $542.1 million, and cash $557.0 million. Redwire reaffirmed full-year 2026 revenue guidance of $450–500 million. Edge Autonomy is not separately capitalised and does not disclose standalone funding.

Why It Matters

Edge Autonomy is the reason Redwire stopped being a space company. A space-infrastructure supplier with thin margins bought a profitable, export-heavy drone business and became a defence contractor with a real backlog. For buyers, the appeal is a mature tactical ISR airframe with a European production base and a Ukraine delivery record at a moment when NATO members are rearming and screening Chinese hardware out of procurement. The dependency runs the other way too: Redwire’s turnaround now rests on a single tactical UAS product line, and a lost Penguin recompete would show up immediately in group results.
