DJI Matrice 400

DJI's heavy-lift flagship: 59 minutes with a thermal camera fitted, a 6 kg payload, 40 km of link and a LiDAR-and-radar sensing set no rival matches at the price. Barred from federal buyers, and since September its import carries 25 percent duty, with 100 percent on the thermal payload.

The DJI Matrice 400 is DJI’s flagship enterprise drone, launched on 10 June 2025 to replace the Matrice 350 RTK. It lifts 6 kg, flies for up to 59 minutes with a Zenmuse H30T fitted, and carries a sensing set the 350 never had: a rotating LiDAR, millimetre-wave radar in six directions and a three-camera vision system. The airframe is rated IP55 and works from -20° to 50°C.

It is the aircraft a utility buys to inspect power lines and a fire service buys to map a wildfire. The enterprise drone guide names it as the platform that superseded the Matrice 350, and the rest of this page explains what that means for a buyer in the United States.

The sensing set is the change from the Matrice 350. A rotating LiDAR that sees 100 m in every direction and a radar tuned to power lines let the aircraft fly close to structures that would have grounded its predecessor, and DJI pitches it for beyond-line-of-sight work on that basis.

Use Cases

Power line and pipeline inspection, where the radar exists to keep the aircraft off the conductor. Large-area mapping with the L2 or L3 LiDAR and the P1 photogrammetry camera. Emergency response, wildfire mapping and search with the H30T’s thermal camera. Anything that needs a 6 kg payload aloft for most of an hour.

Market Context

The Matrice 400 is the most capable aircraft DJI sells, and the one American public agencies cannot buy new. DJI is on the FCC Covered List, federal money cannot procure or operate its aircraft, and twelve states restrict their own agencies too. Existing authorisations survive, so a utility that owns Matrice 350s keeps flying them, but a Matrice 400 bought today is a private-money purchase.

The Section 232 tariffs added the second problem on 3 September 2026. The aircraft alone, at 15.8 kg maximum takeoff weight, falls in the 25 percent tranche; the H30T thermal payload most buyers fit falls in the 100 percent tranche for thermal imagers. DSLRPros listed the aircraft alone at $10,300 in September 2026, without the TB100 batteries or the BS100 charging station, so a working kit costs well more before duty.

The compliant alternatives at this size are few. The Freefly Alta X and Astro Max carry heavy payloads on the Blue UAS Cleared List; neither carries the Matrice 400’s sensing set.
